Details

Darién is a province located in the easternmost part of Panama, bordering the east with Colombia. It is known for its incredible biodiversity, rough terrain and vibrant indigenous cultures. The capital of the province is La Palma.

One of Darién's most famous attractions is the Darién National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and one of the largest protected areas in Central America. The park spans a vast nature of tropical forests, mangroves, rivers and mountains, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs and numerous bird species. The park offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching and wildlife photography, as well as cultural experiences with local indigenous communities.

Darién is also home to indigenous peoples Emberá and Wounaan, who maintain traditional lifestyles and cultural practices. Visitors from the province can learn about indigenous traditions, including crafts, music and dance, and participate in community tourist initiatives.

The remote and rugged terrain of the province has helped preserve its natural beauty and biodiversity, but it also presents challenges for the development of transport and infrastructure. As a result, much of Darién remains relatively out of sight, offering adventurous travelers the opportunity to explore uncommon wild areas.

However, it is worth noting that parts of Darién, particularly near the border with Colombia, are considered remote and potentially dangerous due to drug trafficking and other security concerns. Travelers must be cautious and kept informed about the current security conditions when planning a visit to the region.
